District court in Nowej Wsi, post office in Markuszow, and a Greek Catholic church. Coming out from Poracz you can see formations of Calcium carbonate?. On the right side of the valley in the beginning there are young forests and clusters of bare mountains. From far away you can see a triangular opening. The entrance is 4 meter in height. The cross section of the cave is triangular. The bottom is white rocks under which is clay. In this cave are found the bones of the "cave bear.' The entrance to the larger cave is 2 meters wide. The bottom is covered with small to medium broken rocks. In some places it is 10 meters wide. In the middle of the grotto there is a large room 15 m long, 13 m wide and 8-12 m high. Walls are covered by stalach and stalagm...fantastically beautifully shaped and dissolving. The other side of the cave has a crack 1-2 m wide and 3-4 m high. Vertical wall covering cave from entrance to this wall is 120 meters. Besides bear bones there are deer, wolf (cave wolf) and domestic animals. A description can be found in VIII .....
Brief History of Fayette County
A Brief History of Uniontown, PA
BY Miss Jean Brownfield
To the people coming over the last ridge of the Alleghenies, 200 years ago, the view of our valley must have been one of surpassing beauty. As far as the eye could see, there would have been the carpet of trees, undisturbed through the centuries, extruding Westward to the gently rising hills which border the Monongahela River.
A Brief History of Connellsville
Less than two hundred years ago, the site of Connellsville was a part of a vast wilderness. A powerful tribe of Indians known as the Iroquois claimed it. By permission of these Indians, several tribes of Delawares and Kanhawhas made it their home. One of these tribes located their village about five miles east of Connellsville. Here is an extensive burial ground where it is believed more than one thousand red men slept.
This is the east side of the Old Side as seen from Ronco. I took this idyllic shot in 2001. You can see a red-sided house. It is on Foch Circle. Houses just above it are on Diaz Ave and then higher on East Wood Ave.
The elevation difference from the river (763 feet normal pool elevation) to Jew Hill (at 1200 feet) is roughly 435 feet. The hilltops of the Old Side and New Side are similar at 1100 feet. The mine is 240 feet below the river level. Therefore the mine is some 475 feet below the town center and 575 feet below the high points of the town. The mine workings extend for several miles along the river and were immediately below the town and extended beyond the town boundaries.
